Weightlifter Mattie Rogers Clean & Jerks 140 Kilograms (308.6 Pounds) In Training

Team USA weightlifter Mattie Rogers is putting in work in the gym. The 2019 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) silver medalist shared a post on her Instagram page of a recent training session where she hit a 140-kilogram (308.6-pound) clean & jerk. The lift came as part of a larger training week with international-level USA Weightlifting (USAW) coach and co-owner of Catalyst Athletics, Aimee Ayana Everett.

In her own words, Rogers’ training week involved “SO much volume and intensity.” It consisted of 15 snatches over 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds), 12 cleans and clean & jerks over 90% of her one-rep max (1RM), and hitting personal records every day. Check out the video below of Rogers’ 140-kilogram (308.6-pound) clean & jerk wearing a weightlifting belt at a bodyweight of 77 kilograms courtesy of her Instagram page:

Here were the lifts Rogers hit in that video:

  • Clean & Jerk — 140-kilogram (308.6-pound)
  • Clean & Jerk — 135-kilogram (297.6-pound)
  • Snatch — 108 kilograms (238 pounds)
  • Snatch — 106 kilograms (233.7 pounds

As Everett said in the caption of her Instagram post that featured the same video, Rogers’ lift “wasn’t pretty.” Rogers struggled to stabilize the barbell at the top of the jerk, taking several steps forward (even taking a step off the platform). However, she was able to find the footing in her weightlifting shoes and ultimately score a successful lift.

For context, Rogers’ heaviest clean & jerk at the 2019 IWF World Championships, where she ranked second in the 71-kilogram class behind Katherine Nye, was 134 kilograms (295.4 pounds). Although she did not do it in this video, Rogers has also filmed herself hitting a 110-kilogram (242.5-pound) snatch.

Like many potential 2020 Olympians, Rogers was disappointed by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the Games are currently set to begin on July 23, 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Japanese government are still taking major safety precautions, such as barring international spectators from entering the country.

According to an interview with Rogue, Rogers currently plans to compete at the Arnold Sports Festival (ASF) — the dates of which have yet to be confirmed. That event is a bronze-level qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. By competing at the ASF, she will satisfy the requirement of competing twice in her desired weight class (-76 kilograms) within the Olympic qualification period — which was recently extended to the end of May 2021.
